  • SS Warden Goings on IC and OOC

Figure I would dust the dust that had settled on the old girl. This is an OOC and IC thread for things that are going on with the Simm. If the post is OOC, please mark it as such. If it is IC, please do as as well. Stay tuned for things...

OOC: Brief History of the Warden and Oddities

So, what's in a name? I have no idea. The Warden was the name that came with the ship, and from what I've heard, it is bad luck to rename a ship. How does a Cardassian freighter get the name of Warden? Another mystery. From what I've been told, that was the name of the ship long before I got a hold of it, and before the previous CO had it as well. (Any of you who have been around, let me know!)

I actually took over the Warden from the previous CO. The Warden as I knew it started in about March of 09. I had been kicking around in BF for a while. I started playing on the Essex in 08 with Mel. My very first character in BF was Lt. Menze, a doctor, and then I played another Doctor on the Genesis with Drew. When I saw a posting for a Civilian ship, I thought it was a pretty interesting concept and different than what I had been playing. I joined up, made an engineer/fixer named Walter Jones and made my first couple posts. I'm not sure what happened, but the CO left or went absent. *edit* Found the original e-mails, It was Admiral T'lar(Mel) who was in charge, oh man, some old 86 names here. */end edit* They asked for a volunteer to step up and I said I would take it.

The rest is more or less history I suppose. As I moved up in rank and responsibility in the fleet, the Warden was always my ship, but since it wasn't a fleet sim, I had to make an Admiralty simm just for appearances

So, after I took over the Warden, first thing was first. Needed a site. Set up a 000 webhost for free. That worked for a while until it got "Deleted" They recommended that I upgrade to a premium account to "save" my content.

I took the plunge and figured out my own hosting and Nova, having never really coded, run, administered anything before that besides an old Geocities site I signed up for a host gator and hosted it on my old guild domain. Fortunately JonM makes Nova and before that SMS so easy to use that even a caveman like me can figure it out. .

The Warden's first post that I have recorded was June 17th, 2009, so about 10 years:
      https://sswarden.rophf.com/index.php/sim/viewpost/1

I can't remember if I had saved the SQL database from the 000 webhost or not, but that is the first recorded post I have.

I've had quite a few people through the Warden over the years, and I've been told that we've created a bit of an infamy for ourselves! As one of the only civilian sims, I suppose you can't really help that. We've never been a very high post count sim but the group of people I'm very fortunate enough to work with make it easy.

A few other random tidbits about the ship:

The Groumal or Groumall class ship (seen it both ways, believe the more correct way is Groumall, but hey, whatever) appears on screen during the DS9 episode Return to Grace. Other uses of the freighter are found in DS9 and in Voyager as "Cardassian Freighter" the Klingons even made a copy of it.

We've made some slight modifications over the years, but mainly we joke about how broken and not put together the ship is. Being held together with Laser welds, ducttape, and the sheer will to live. Our engineer, Jan Valentine as made a career of holding her together.

Instead of missions, I decided early on that I wanted to call them a bit different, I decided on calling them "Sessions" with a tie to a song that would represent the story, for instance,

      "Session One - Jailhouse Rock
Their first job, a prison escort mission. Most of the details on the nature of the run are a mystery. How hard can it be? Go to the prison colony, pick up some miscreants and bring them to a Federation prison. Sometimes old debts are hard to pay back."

I would post the lyric or the song and most of the story would revolve around that. I'm still doing that, the current story, "Set 3 - Session 1 - Sold!" is based on a Country Western Song the details an auction.

That's it for now, in a future post, I'll talk about some of the challenges of running a civi sim.
